"Strengthen us O God, to relieve the oppressed,
to hear the groans of poor prisoners,
to reform the abuses of all professions;
that many be made not poor to make a few rich;
for Jesus Christ’s sake."
~ Oliver Cromwell

It's ironic hearing Cromwell's prayer. Today is Levellers Day (http://radref.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/levellers-day.html). Having broken my ankle before Easter I won't be joining the crowds in Burford this year but I'm reminded that Cromwell was both angel and demon. Three Levelller soldiers executed at Crowell's orders. Sometimes we pray against ourselves.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder Philip. Many have mixed feelings about Cromwell (Levellers and Catholics for instance). I think the spirit of the pray, however is one that most of us can agree with.
